Obama's Labor and Employment Law Agenda - Responding to the Challenges to Corporate Growth
Speaker: Paul Ostroff, Lane Powell

The Obama administration's legislative and regulatory agenda in labor and employment law will have significant consequences for business growth, corporate development, and mergers and acquisitions.  Paul Ostroff, a shareholder at Lane Powell PC specializing in labor and employment law, will review what to expect from Washington over the next year, and how managers can most effectively plan for these changes.

Among the topics Mr. Ostroff will address are:

  • The Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA)
    • What it is and how it will make employers more vulnerable to unionization.
    • Which industries will be most vulnerable to unionization if the EFCA is enacted?
    • How managers can reduce the potential for unionization of their company's workforce.
    • How the EFCA may affect financial planning and business valuation in mergers and acquisitions.
  • Possible Expansion of the WARNAct ("FOREWARN")
    • How FOREWARN will impact layoffs and workforce restructuring and what managers can do about it.
  • Possible Changes Concerning Independent Contractors
  • The Fair Pay Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act
  • Changes to Wage and Hour Laws and Enforcement Policies
  • Immigration Related Policies
  • Employee Leave

2009 Annual Golf Tournament
The 2009 ACG Golf Tournament will be held on Wednesday,  August 12th at Langdon Farms. It will be a 1:45 shotgun start. Lots of fun is in store for players, with the tournament providing a great opportunity for camaraderie with fellow members, guests and business associates.  One goal is to increase the number of players. Toward that goal, the entry fee has been lowered to $125.
For many years the ACG Golf Tournament has provided scholarships to OSU, U of O and PSU Business School students. The tournament will once again raise money for scholarships through the selling of raffle tickets to win a barrel of wine.

ACG Portland is one of 53 chapters with more than 12,000 members in North America and Europe. Founded in 1954, the Association for Corporate Growth is a global association for professionals involved in corporate growth, corporate development, and mergers and acquisitions. Members of ACG are from corporations, private equity, finance, and professional service firms representing Fortune 500, Fortune 1000, FTSE 100, and mid-market companies. Our local Board of Directors is committed to maintaining a balance between corporate and professional service members (3:1 ratio) in the chapter, which currently approximates 150 members.

Throughout the year, our Chapter supports programs where business executives and resource experts share their experience and knowledge. The information provided and the relationships developed are invaluable in fostering corporate growth. These events and several social gatherings during the year provide our members and guests unparalleled networking opportunities.
